 A PORTUGUESE ROAD TRIP......Part II

Following on from my previous post......the next stage of our road trip took us on to Lisbon.  My husband was born in Lisbon and brought up for the first few years in Estoril further along the coast, and had not been back since....for me it was a first visit to a City that I had heard so much about and had so looked forward to visiting.

We were staying in the 'Alfama' which is the oldest district of Lisbon, spread out on steep cobbled hills between the Castle, down to the Tejo River.  Rich with history, fantastic restaurants and Fado bars.....it is the most authentic part of Lisbon.

Fantastic views in every direction from the top....down towards 'Down Town' where there was fabulous shopping.....and towards the water......stunning architecture everywhere one looked.  One of the oldest cities in the world, pre dating Roman times, it is a fascinating and visually rewarding place to visit.  They say it is a 'photographer's' dream to visit and they are not wrong.....I took several hundred photos, too many to share!

For our two nights in Lisbon, we decided to rent an apartment in the historical Alfama.  With very few hotels in this fabulous historic area, it was the perfect choice.  More than just the apartment we were expecting, it turned out to be the most stylish small 18th Century 'coach house' on two levels,  set down a quiet cobbled back street.

Casa das Merceeiras is one of two beautifully and lovingly restored properties owned by the charming Teresa.....meticulous attention to every detail was evident throughout.  Kept strictly true to its original features, with a stunning vaulted brick ceiling in both the bedroom and downstairs.....Teresa had styled it throughout in a very cool, contemporary 'Moorish' style and it worked so beautifully.  My photos don't quite do this gorgeous building justice....but it really was a very comfortable base for the two days.  An open plan sitting area, kitchen and dining room downstairs, and a cosy bedroom and bathroom upstairs.  Each day, a delicious breakfast was brought to us and we were touched by the little unexpected details such finding a lovely bottle of wine and olives waiting for us when we got back from a long day of site seeing!  Teresa was one of the most interesting and lovely people we met on our trip.....so passionate about her City (where she is also a tour guide) and someone who truly cared about the comfort and quality of our stay.  We shall definitely return and stay in one of her coach house apartments next time we are in Lisbon....it was a real 'home away from home' and as much as a hotel is always a treat, there are times when living like a 'local' gives a more authentic travel experience!

Narrow passageways....leading to a new view or surprise
round every corner.

One of Lisbon's famous trams.

Looking down from St. George's Castle.....

Stunning views in every direction.......

One of the most important aspects of travel....at least for us.....is the food.  Lisbon did not disappoint! Fabulous restaurants everywhere, especially good for fresh seafood and delicious tapas.....it was just as well we did a lot of walking each day to burn all those extra calories!

We were sad to leave Lisbon, but excited for the next stage of our trip which took us west along the coast to Estoril where Andrew had lived as a child....and then to the seaside town of Cascais, where we sat in the first warm sunshine of our trip down in the marina and ate a delicious traditional prawn curry dish, watching the
yachts come in.

After lunch, we headed north to the stunning town of Sintra for the afternoon, with its beautiful palace and breathtaking views.

Our destination that evening was at the Pousada in the historic hilltop town of Obidos.  Situated in a Castle within the old fortified walls
of this pretty white washed ancient town.

A perfect view......the table where we sat for our delicious dinner that night.

Now on the final stage of our tour.....we travelled the next day up the spectacular Atlantic coast, taking in miles of unspoilt beaches and countryside.

Our last stay was just south of Porto, on a very beautiful estuary at Torrera.  Right on the water in the cool, contemporary Pousada they have there.....the water literally lapping our balcony.

Traditional fishing boats coming in, at Torreira......

After yet another delicious dinner, and a good night's rest having fallen asleep listening to the sound of the water gently lapping beneath us.....we woke to enjoy our last day before flying
home that evening.

At the hotel's suggestion, we made the hour's walk that took us through the tranquil pine forest of the nature reserve....that led us to one of the most spectacular, empty, unspoilt beaches I have ever seen.  Not another person in sight.......immaculately clean golden sand......the thunderous Atlantic waves crashing in........this really was the perfect end to the most perfect 'Portuguese road trip'.........

Happy Friday and wishing you all a
wonderful weekend!

A PORTUGUESE ROAD TRIP....Part I

All Photos: Sophia Home
'Porto's beautiful architecture'

As my regular readers will know, my husband Andrew and I have just returned from a trip to Portugal.......a 'Road Trip' covering over 1000km, starting in the North in Porto, then through the breathtaking Douro Valley and up in to the mountains and the relatively undiscovered region of Alentejo.  Fabulous Lisbon was our next stop, before we travelled back up the stunning Atlantic coastline back to Porto to fly home.  Six different overnight stays in the seven days......it was an inspiring and fantastic insight in to the ancient history, beauty, and gastronomy of this beautiful country, away from the more frequented tourist destination of the Southern Algarve.

First stop was Porto (also known as Oporto), Portugal's second largest city.  Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres and is registered as a World Heritage Site. As well as its beautiful architecture and ancient history, dating back to when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire.......it is of course famous for its delicious Port wine, produced from grapes in the nearby spectacular Douro Valley.

Our stay that first night was at the charming guesthouse '6Only'.....an elegant town house with appropriately, just six rooms.  Beautifully restored by its charming owners Mariana and Pedro, who had so stylishly created a cool contemporary interior, whilst retaining the building's original architectural details.  Nothing was too much trouble for our generous and friendly hosts, and we were made to feel so welcome.  Mariana directed us to all the best places to go in the City, and also recommended and reserved for us a fantastic little fish restaurant down in the harbour for dinner. After a delicious meal that night of clams in wine and garlic, and having had a full day of sightseeing, we slept well in our large, stylish and comfortable room. We were treated the next morning to a fabulous breakfast, whilst Mariana kindly mapped out our route along the Douro Valley along with another fantastic restaurant recommendation for lunch.  If you are looking for a very reasonably priced, simply stylish place to stay in Porto, I can not recommend '6Only' more highly.  We were sad to say goodbye to these lovely people.....but hope to return one day!

View over the City

As well as the beautiful architecture, Porto has some original and fascinating shops amongst its hilly cobbled streets.  One that we particularly loved was 'A Vida Portuguesa', a beautifully fitted shop over two floors, selling a lovely selection of Portuguese china, gifts and
interior accessories.

Porto is home to many beautiful churches and monuments......

What has to be one of the most stunning bookshops in the World......'Livrario Lello' is somewhere you could quite happily while away a few hours browsing.....

'Livrario Lello' bookshop.

The famous Majestic Cafe, dating back to 1921, was a must for our coffee stop.....with its elaborate interior of gilded mirrors, ornate pendant lamps, marble walls and cherubs. This cafe has been famously frequented by intellectuals, artists and writers, as well as many notable dignitaries over its lifetime.....one of its famous clientele was also JK Rowling, who allegedly wrote the first few chapters of 'Vein of Gold', sitting at a table of the Majestic Cafe....little did she know then, quite how it would change her life.....

Our trip then took us along the breathtaking Douro Valley.....home to some of the most famous vineyards in the World.......

Our stop for that night was at the Poussada Belmonte...a former monastery just outside the mountain village of Belmonte......a beautiful bedroom on two floors with spectacular views and calm, quiet, understated service.  The 'Poussada' group are government owned and run along similar lines to the Spanish Paradours.....offering accommodation in some of the country's most historical and magnificent preserved buildings.

Drinks in the beautiful 'Drawing Room' which was once the chapel, was followed by a truly memorable dinner....not just for the delicious food, but for the enthusiastic friendliness of our wonderfully camp waiter!

Inner courtyard......

Beautiful antiques and objet such as this piece of
ecclesiastical stone throughout.....

The next day we drove through the beautiful unspoilt Alentejo countryside, full of wild flowers, olive and cork trees, and dotted with picturesque medieval towns and villages, largely unchanged over the centuries.  That afternoon we arrived at the historic town of Evora, a Unesco world heritage site, where we stayed in another  Pousada, this time a former
14th Century Convent.

A treat lay in store, as we were told that as they had to change a detail in our itinerary, we had been upgraded to their Presidental Suite as means of an apology......and what a treat it was!

Our beautiful private sitting room in the 'Presidential Suite'.....

The sitting room of our suite was quite spectacular!  The most beautifully hand painted frescos, with elegant antiques throughout.  This led through to a large comfortable bedroom and bathroom/dressing-room area......it was very spoiling and certainly was something to make a girl feel like a princess!

My next post will take in our trip to Lisbon and back up the spectacular Atlantic Coast.

I do hope you are all having a lovely week?
